Director's statement

'The Calm Sea' grew out of an online trans-Atlantic process of storytelling and poetic creation between Mia and her aunt, the Colombian poet Lilián Pallares. On one occasion Lilián told Mia five words in Spanish and before she could explain what to do Mia was creating her poem, 'Mar en Calma', (The Calm Sea).

When Mia could finally visit Spain for the first time in 2021, aged seven, we went together to the Valencian coast. Although we were at the seaside I wanted to find alternative ways to represent the sea and enter into the poem. The filming was a spontaneous extension of the creative process and captures the simple act of painting. I composed the music together with the editing of the images so they both compliment and respond to each other.
